Harris Rosen shares what motivated him to pursue a legal career, his struggles during the admissions process, and his advice for young lawyers looking to make a splash in the legal field.
Harris Rosen is the Principal Lawyer at Harris Rosen Professional Corporation. He graduated with a J.D. from the University of Ottawa in 1992. Harris specializes in higher education law and provides legal services to investors, career colleges, ESL schools, corporate trainers, degree granters, law firms, & private high schools.
Rosen’s motivation for becoming a lawyer was to “be a change-maker where change is desirable and to make my small contribution to the democratic process.” “Laws maintain civility in an otherwise lawless society,” he concluded.
As Harris recalled his journey as a law student, he shared candid advice about writing personal statements, saying, “I have a rule that I live by when it comes to writing or speaking: nothing is more powerful than sincerity. Put another way, be authentic. Let the world know who you are.”
One piece of advice Rosen shared that stands out is that many young lawyers place “too much emphasis on knowing the law versus knowing enough about their clients, stakeholders, and the industry they are representing. An industry-specific approach will get you further.” He asserted that getting to know people and their pain points is the key to success. Merely understanding the application of the law is a necessary but hardly sufficient condition to success for young lawyers today, added Rosen.
